Nelson finished with 1,464 points, with Jeffrey Massingill (1,398), John Kaanta (1,379), Jake Redetzke (1,183) and Pat Doar (1,000) rounding out the top five.
This year’s series featured 17 scheduled events and culminated in the Northland, first at Halvor Lines Speedway in Proctor Thursday for the Silver 1000 followed by Grand Rapids Speedway Friday and Hibbing Raceway Saturday and Sunday.
While Grand Rapids was rained out, Nelson helped cement his lead by winning Saturday in Hibbing, with Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing second and Doar, of New Richmond, Wisconsin, third.
On Sunday, Jay Kintner of Hibbing took the checkered flag while Doar was second and Derek Vesel of Hibbing third. Massingill, of Keewatin, was fourth but it wasn’t enough to overtake Nelson, who wound up ninth.
While the Wissota Late Model Challenge Series has officially wrapped up there is still plenty of racing action on tap this weekend as Gondik Law Speedway will host the 33rd annual Northern Nationals Thursday through Saturday in Superior.
Thursday’s racing features the Northern Renegades Sprint Car Series while Late Models take over for the weekend.
Vesel, Massingill and Deven VanHouse of Silver Bay are among the Northland drivers vying atop the Wissota national points standings, with those three drivers fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Late Model standings.
In Modifieds, rookie Brandon Copp of Brule is third, Jody Bellefeuille of Carlton fourth and Johnny Broking of Grand Rapids sixth.
Proctor’s Kevin Burdick is tops in Super Stocks, while Dalton Carlson of Cohasset is eighth.
Tyler Kintner of Hibbing is third in Midwest Modifieds
The Northland is extremely well represented in Pure Stocks, with Chad Finckbone of Grand Rapids sitting atop the standings, one of eight Northland drivers in the top 10. Ashland’s DeJay Jarecki is the top one from the area in Hornets as he sits third.
