Golf Finishes Fourth at Matthews Auto Intercollegiate - Binghamton University Athletics

APALACHIN, N.Y. -- Graduate student Justin Lane finished tied for fourth place, pacing Binghamton to a fourth-place finish at the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate, which was held at the Links of Hiawatha. The two-day event, which included 14 teams and 82 golfers, concluded on Monday afternoon.

The Bearcats were one of four teams to finish the tournament under par, with a two-day score of 289-286=575/1-under par. All five golfers finished in the top half of the standings.

Lane started the day tied for first but struggled for most of the round and was 4-over par through 16 holes. He regrouped to birdie the 17th hole and eagle the 18 hole to earn his second straight Top 10 performance of the season. He finished the two-day event with a score of 68-73=141/3-under par.

"The front nine didn't go so well and I had a bad hole after the turn," he said. "But I was able to finish strong and have a respectable round."

Senior D.J. Griffiths, meanwhile, finished tied for 17th place after posting a team-best 68/4-under par in the second round. His two-day score was 76-68=144/even par. It marked his second straight Top-20 performance of the year.

Freshman Shawn Colella completed a solid weekend, tying for 23rd overall with a two-day score of 72-74=146/2-over par.

Completing the scoring for the Bearcats were graduate student Nacho Glagovsky and junior Evan Sitts, both of whom tied for 38th place with a two-day score of 149/5-over par.

"This was a solid weekend for us," head coach Bernie Herceg said. "Justin battled back after struggling for most of the round and D.J. shot terrific for us. We also got good performances by Shawn, Nacho and Evan."

Lane was tied with Devin Smith of Mt. St. Mary's after the first round. On Monday, however, Smith fired a 65/6-under par to win the individual title by six strokes. His two-day score was 68-65=133/11-under par.

Smith led the Mountaineers to the team title with a two-day score of 284-278=562/14-under par. The ties the event record set by Binghamton in 2018.

Up next for Binghamton is the Georgetown Invitational next Sunday and Monday.

NOTES: For the season, Lane's scoring average is now a career-best 72.0 strokes per round. He has finished under par in three of his seven rounds ... Lane's 68/4-under par on Sunday represents his best round (to par) of the season.
