Firefighters were battling a massive blaze early Friday at a Volkswagen auto service center in Union County, police said.
Police and firefighters were called to a report of a fire about 6:35 a.m. in the 900 block of East Elizabeth Avenue in Linden, according to police Capt. Christopher Guenther.
“Responders were met by a heavy smoke condition, and quickly located a fire in the garage portion of the building,” Guenther said. “This is one of the most intense and severe fires we’ve seen in a long time.”
The blaze broke out inside the service department of a building owned by Reydel Volkswagen of Linden, police said.
Video from the scene showed flames raging and thick, black smoke pouring through the top of the structure.
The business was not open when the fire began and police said they had no reports of injuries.
Linden’s first responders were receiving mutual aid from around the county and firefighters as of 8:20 a.m. were “actively battling the fire,” Guenther said.
