Andy Majano, 24, of West New York, has been charged with assault by auto, knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana), possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public building, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, according to Police Det. Additionally, Majano received motor vehicle summonses for DWI, refusal to submit a breath sample, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to stop or yield.
On Friday, October 22nd, at about 1:39 a.m., Police Officers Michael Straten and Jesse Castellano responded to the area of 3rd and Bloomfield Streets on a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.
Upon officers arrival, they located a pedestrian lying on the southwest corner of the intersection. The victim sustained injuries to his head, hands, and right leg. He also complained of pain to his rib area.
After the initial investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle involved in the crash was traveling northbound on Bloomfield Street. The pedestrian was crossing in the crosswalk at the intersection of 3rd and Bloomfield Streets from the southeast to the southwest corner.
The vehicle collided with the pedestrian as he reached the southwest corner. The vehicle did not stop and continued driving north on Bloomfield Street. Soon after the officers arrived, a witness identified the vehicle involved in the crash.
The vehicle had traveled eastbound on 3rd Street and was then stopped at 3rd and Bloomfield Streets when it was identified. Straten conducted a motor vehicle stop as Castellano attended to the pedestrian.
The following officers responded as back up: Sgts. Nicholas Burke, Donald Rosso, as well as Police Officers Anthony Olivera and Daniel Barron. Straten suspected the driver was under the influence of an intoxicant.
Police Officer Daniel Grossi performed a standardized field sobriety test and determined that Majano was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. Majano was placed under arrest for DWI.
A search of Majano’s vehicle revealed 21 bags that contained over six ounces of suspected marijuana. He was transported to headquarters were he refused to provide breath samples for chemical testing.
His criminal charges were placed on a warrant and he was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, while the pedestrian has been released from the hospital, authorities said.
