Lane Tied for First After Day One of Matthews Auto Intercollegiate - Binghamton University Athletics

APALACHIN, N.Y. ---  Graduate student Justin Lane is tied for the lead after round one of the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate, which is being held at the Links of Hiawatha. Halfway through the tournament, the Bearcats are in fourth place out of 14 teams.

Lane fired a 68/4-under par to share the first round lead with Devin Smith of Mt. St. Mary's. After shooting a 35-1-under par over the first nine holes, he closed with a 33-3-under par on the final nine holes. His birdie on the 18th hole assured him of the first-place tie.

Freshman Shawn Colella shot a 72/even par in his first round in a home tournament during his collegiate career. He is currently tied for 13th place.

In a tie for 19th place is junior Evan Sitts, who shot a 73/1-over par.

Binghamton also fielded a B team, which is currently in 10th place. Leading that group in the first round was sophomore Ryan Lovelass, who fired a 70/2-under par to finish in a tie for seventh place.

"Overall, I thought it was a very solid performance by our team today," head coach Bernie Herceg said. "We got an unbelievable first round from Justin. I am very happy for him. Ryan nearly shot in the 60s and we had very solid rounds by Evan and Shawn."

Led by Smith, Mt. St. Mary's finished the opening round in first place with a 284/4-under par. Colgate and Temple tied for second (286/2-under par) followed by the Bearcats in fourth place (289/1-over par).

The second and final round of the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate begins on Monday at 9 a.m.
