APALACHIN, N.Y. – The La Salle men's golf team finished the first round of the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon, sitting in 11th place with a first round of 302 (+14).ABOUT THE COURSE
- The Links at Hiawatha Landing is a par 72 course, playing at 7,159 yards.
- The tournament consists of two rounds, with the final round concluding on Monday afternoon.
- 14 teams are in competition with 82 golfers in action, including 13 individuals.
LA SALLE SCORECARD
- Matthew Werner leads the Explorers with an even par round, scoring a 72 to sit four shots off the leader in a tie for 13th. Only three blemishes mark his scorecard, making up for it with four birdies over the course of the day.
- Kristian Fortis sits in a tie for 39th after his 18, finishing at 75 (+3). After a double bogey on 11 en route to a +3 performance on his opening nine, Fortis made the turn to the front and cleaned up to shoot even par on the front nine.
- Nikita Romanov shot a 37 on the back nine before turning to the front, carding a 39 to give himself a +4 on the afternoon with a 76.
- Karsen Rush was unable to record a birdie but kept his blemishes to a minimum as the junior finished with a 79 (+7).
- Matt Lafond rounded out the team's performance with an 81 (+9).
- Playing as an individual, Alex Gekas finished his first round of the tournament with an 86 (+14).
THE FIELD
- Mount St. Mary's holds a two-stroke advantage heading into the final round, the team shooting 284 (-4). Colgate and Temple sit right behind in a tie for second with a 286 (-2).
- La Salle sits in 11th place after day one, eight strokes behind Saint Joseph's in 5th place.
- Binghamton's Justin Lane and Mount St. Mary's Devin Smith end the first round with the lowest scorecard, both registering a 68 (-4). Werner is one of 18 golfers to shoot even or under in the round.
