State Farm: Illinois is No. 5 for auto parts thefts - HOI ABC

(WEEK) — Illinois is in the top of the list when it comes to vehicle parts theft.

State Farm on Thursday released claims data that placed the Land of Lincoln at No. 5 when it comes to auto thefts, particularly with catalytic converters.

The catalytic converters contain rare metals — platinum, rhodium and palladium — that make them a prime target.

State Farm reports it paid out nearly $1.1 million for just over 700 catalytic converter theft claims in Illinois in 2020.

So far this year, from January 1 through June 30, State Farm has paid nearly $847,000 for 590 catalytic converter theft claims.

“Depending on the size of the converter, thieves are selling them for hundreds, even thousands, of dollars. For the owner of the car, it can be a costly crime due to the potential loss of work, finding and paying for alternate transportation, and paying thousands to get the car fixed,” according to State Farm’s press release.
